Is Hurricane Sandy going to be good or bad for the Boating industry? There are two sides to every story.

Many boats (about 65,000), brokerages, docks, service companies were destroyed. Some commentators think Sandy will actually  benefit the boating industry. Huge Insurance payouts to boat owners,  boat dealerships are growing, a boon for dock builders and dock repair services is also seen.

Please see CBS.com  report for part of the answer.

How to sell your boat on line

How to sell your boat on-line.

The first step is to decide when you want to sell your boat. Time of year is important. If the boat is in the water the buyer will be able to tell your boat  does not leak, and it has good curb appeal. Now is the time to get your papers (title, insurance, boat mortgage) together. Contact your secretary of state or province to find out what procedure you need to follow to effect the sale legally.

Choose www.zziiggee.com web site to list your boat because there is no charge. (If you wish to upgrade you may do so at a small extra charge.) A good site with lots of traffic is http://www.zziiggee.com is a free site (USA and Canada).

Next – In your word processer in your computer, write the wording for you ad. Provide details such as length, draft, color, hull material, fuel type, engine brand, and type, inboard or outboard, what items are included. Get your photos ready to upload. Failure to use photos will make you sale difficult at best.

Next –  Make sure your boat is clean, and looks good. Remove all items that are not to be included. If your boat is expensive get a survey – to establish a realist value and find out what needs to be repaired or replaced. Set your price range  you want to get. (Maintenance logs, history of upgrades, and documents will show you are knowledgeable.)

Next – show you boat by appointment, do not give out too much info (other than what is stated in your ad) over the phone, be prepared to get sea trials and demos.

Beware of low-ballers and tire kickers who are not serious. You must know what your boat is realistically worth. Most buyers will assume that it’s lower than your asking price. Do not be in a rush to sell. Selling your boat may take days, weeks, or months, depending on your location, price, and time of year. Usually 3-6 months. Be patient. You will need bill of sale, boat titles, warranty cards, maintenance records, etc. Make sure you cancel your insurance after the transaction is completed. The buyer is responsible for any sales tax due, and also responsible to provide his own license plate for the trailer.

Port Huron to Mackinac Race

July 20, 2013 – July 22, 2013

Location: Port Huron, MI
Lake: Lake Huron
Type of Event: Race

The Port Huron to Mackinac race is sponsored by the Bayview Yacht Club (Detroit) and is reported to be the longest consecutively held freshwater race. Over two hundred boats, from 30′ to 70′, compete annually along two courses (Shore and Cove Island), which begin in Lake Huron just north of the St. Clair River. Although of different lengths, both courses finish at Mackinac Island, MI. The requirements and regulations for this race for 2013 can be found at the weblink below. In addition to the attraction of the race itself, the city of Port Huron conducts an annual family festival (Blue Water festival) which runs before and concurrent with the race.

Competing boats generally begin arriving a day or two before the race and begin staging along the Black River. Walking along the river gives a good vantage for observing the different classes of boats as well as the crews preparing them. Food and merchandise vendors are also located along the river. As a point of reference, you may want to park near the Port Huron Yacht Club (212 Quay Street, Port Huron), which will put you at one end of boat row. If you are looking for a vantage point to watch the boats sail (motor) up the Saint Clair river towards the starting line, try the park-like areas off of Thomas Edison Parkway, under the Blue Water bridge.

Cleveland OH 2013 Races

Link to Cleveland Sailing :  http://clevelandsails.com/

The Cleveland Sailing Association, (CSA), was developed to increase interest in sailboat racing in the Greater Cleveland Area.

We do so by scoring our sponsor club’s regattas in series format. This gives you, the racing skipper, a chance to travel to other clubs and sail in a variety of races while enjoying the hospitality and camaraderie of the Cleveland sailing community

The Advantages of the CSA:
CSA entrants are granted free dockage (Wednesday to Wednesday) at host regattas.
Registration discounts for CSA Boat of the Year designated events.
A chance to participate in the CSA invitational race, The Cleveland Cup.

CSA scores and awards four series

Boat of the Year (BOTY)
The BOTY is the most prestigious and lengthy CSA series. It encourages participation in all club regattas that are designated CSA events.

South Shore Cruising Series
Designed to encourage point to point racing without forcing a yacht to travel long distances or have to participate in races beyond their ability due to distance or weather.

Women’s Series
Women’s races are raced with an all women crew. A male coach is allowed on board and he cannot participate helming or crewing the boat.

Double Handed Series
Double handed races are for yachts that are crewed by 2 people.

Kingston Rhode Island sailing club

http://kingstonsailingclub.org/

Kingston sailing club

General Info: The Kingston Sailing Club (KSC) promotes sailboat racing and cruising and hosts a varied program of sailboat racing on the Hudson River off Kingston as well as a number of cruising and social events for its members.

KSC is a member of the Hudson River Yacht Racing Association (HRYRA), which comprises six yacht clubs along the river associated with U.S. Sailing.

The racing schedule includes three different series – spring & fall and a “home” series for yachts that do not race in out of town regattas. The races are held on Sundays from May to late October.

KSC also hosts two open regattas: The Maritime Cup Regatta on June 2nd & 3rd, 2012, which is part of the HRYRA series of regattas, and the Spinnenweber Cup on October 13th & 14th.

The club offers a pleasant and challenging racing environment, suitable for both beginners and experienced racers. Racing is open to all boat sizes and designs. As a minimum, one Jib & Main (JAM) and one Spinnaker (SPIN) fleet are established for each series. Boats are assigned a handicap based on the PHRF ratings system, as administered by HRYRA.

During the racing season from May through October Skippers’ meetings are held every Sunday at 10am under the KSC tent at the Hudson River Maritime Museum on the Roundout in Kingston, where the club is based. We invite new skippers and crew to attend. Any yacht is welcome to participate for two race days before full membership is requested.

The club is run by volunteer flag officers, nominated and elected by the membership. The KSC Board of Officers meet monthly on the first Wednesday of every month and all members are encouraged to attend.

The club collects a nominal membership fee to cover operating expenses, including the purchase of club equipment for the conduct of races. Full membership for skipper & yacht is $125.00 annually. Associate membership, open to crew and other interested parties, is $25.00

2013 Kingston Racing Schedule is forth coming: waiting on current data.
