What is a JON boat?

What is a JON boat? Jon boats are FLAT boats, not built for speed, but are in fact designed to be slow. They are usually used on fresh water; When used on estuaries, use is reserved for calm non turbulent waters. A jon boat is a perfect boat for a beginner or an amateur. Even so they are used extensively by seasoned boaters for nature viewing, photography, scientific study, hunting and fishing. They are designed to float over the water, reeds, muck in quiet areas, and do not have a V-shaped hull/bottom. They are designed for smooth lakes, quiet rivers. Use of jon boats in turbulent waters, open ocean, tidal areas is not wise or safe. Continue reading

How To Select A Wetsuit, Most boaters or water sport enthusiasts who: scuba dive, wind surf, kayak, white water rafting, triathlon, long distance swim, swim the English channel, or ride a PWC (personal water craft) use a wetsuit. A wetsuit will allow you to venture into colder water, allowing you to extend the scuba or PWC season, by keeping your body warm and avoiding hypothermia. A wetsuit has some buoyancy which is an added safety factor. In essence, you are wearing a suit of thin foam. How to Winterize your boat. Many boaters are aggravated when the season change. Come fall, it is time to get the boat ready for winter. Yet, this can be a good time to evaluate the condition of your boat, inspect the various systems, and do preventative maintenance. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Take advantage of the situation and make the most of it. Depending on your climate, the best place to store your boat during the off season is out of the water.
